Friends of IPM Awards
The mission of the Southern IPM Center is to champion the development and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM), the science of managing pests while protecting people, the environment and economy. Each Regional Center engages broadly with stakeholders to identify and address regional pest priorities in agriculture, communities and natural areas.
Since 2003, the Southern IPM Center (SIPMC) has worked with USDA, Land Grant universities, Extension, and many other partners in promoting and facilitating the development and implementation of IPM in many settings across the region.
Many of these partners have contributed to the region’s well-being for years or even decades.
IPM Educator Award
The IPM Educator Friends of IPM award recognizes a teacher or group of teachers who successfully teach IPM techniques with successful educational programs that have inspired others to practice IPM.
Dr. Sonja Swiger
Dr. Sonja Swiger, Texas A&M University
Dr. Sonja Swiger is a Professor and Extension Entomologist at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. She specializes in veterinary entomology and vector control.
Sonja’s Public Health Entomology program aims to enhance mosquito management and surveillance techniques among Texas public health and pest control professionals. Sonja’s program strives to improve vector management decisions and teach professionals proper pesticide application methods by providing high-quality training and up-to-date mosquito management information.
During her 16 years with Texas A&M Agrilife Research and Extension, Sonja has provided valuable training courses on vector identification, disease detection, and vector control. Sonja conducted 169 vector-focused courses, training over 7,660 people on the importance of IPM principles in vector control and disease management. Since 2008, Sonja has delivered over 934 enlightening presentations to stakeholders, pest control operators, and public health professionals.
As an extension of her educational efforts, Sonja has led specialized training workshops, including Advanced Mosquito Identification and a 3-Day Master Certification and Tick workshop. Sonja’s courses promote productive and environmentally sound vector control and thoroughly equip participants with constructive vector management tools. While the workshops include a spoken overview of common mosquitoes and ticks in participants’ areas, Sonja allows workshop attendees to examine common pests under a microscope, strategically incorporating a hands-on element into her workshops to improve participants’ ability to identify specimens. Sonja also shows participants how to test mosquitoes for insecticide resistance and which application methods are most appropriate and effective.
To gauge the success of her educational programs, Sonja carefully studies her course evaluations to identify areas of improvement in her courses and workshops. Course evaluations indicate that Sonja’s recertification classes have an average annual satisfaction rating of 98%. More importantly, 95 to 99% of workshop attendees report that Sonja’s informative, engaging workshops increase their knowledge of IPM practices in vector management.
Sonja has authored a prolific number of Extension publications, all teaching IPM techniques for livestock owners and public health professionals. Notably, she co-authored the Texas Mosquito Management manual, a 76-page publication created in response to the 2012 West Nile outbreak in Texas. This manual, which was also developed into an online course, guides Texas mosquito control personnel and provides fundamental mosquito management information. Sonja has written many publications and pamphlets responding to public health emergencies, such as the 2016 Zika outbreak. Sonja’s enriching educational publications advance the use of IPM practices in vector control and serve as essential resources for public health and pest control professionals.
Through her courses, workshops, and extensive public health publications, Sonja’s dedicated efforts support the implementation of IPM strategies in public health and vector control in the southern region.
