Friends of IPM Awards
The mission of the Southern IPM Center is to champion the development and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM), the science of managing pests while protecting people, the environment and economy. Each Regional Center engages broadly with stakeholders to identify and address regional pest priorities in agriculture, communities and natural areas.
Since 2003, the Southern IPM Center (SIPMC) has worked with USDA, Land Grant universities, Extension, and many other partners in promoting and facilitating the development and implementation of IPM in many settings across the region.
Many of these partners have contributed to the region’s well-being for years or even decades.
IPM Educator Award
The IPM Implementer Friends of IPM award recognizes “on the ground” implementation of IPM, specifically to IPM practitioners.
Dan Killingsworth
Dan Killingsworth, Florida
Dan Killingsworth is the Director of Environmental Security Pest Control in Pensacola, Florida. In his 30-year pest control career, Mr. Killingsworth has provided quality pest control services to Florida residents and elevated private-sector mosquito management practices.
Dan uses cultural, biological, and engineering practices where possible to minimize the use of chemicals and insecticides in his pest control. His effective combination of management strategies reduces the risk of developing resistance to a single tactic.
Recognizing the need for IPM practices in the private sector, Dan regularly implements IPM principles in his pest control business. Dan carefully tailors his pest control strategy based on initial surveillance results to minimize the use of pesticides and intrusion into customers’ daily lives. Dan regularly shares valuable insights with other pest management professionals to promote the use of IPM to reduce pests in the private sector.
Dan’s work with the Heron’s Forest Property Owner’s Association in Pensacola, FL, demonstrates commendable implementation of IPM practices in his business. Dan skillfully applied IPM principles to reduce the population of biting insects in the coastal residential community. His effective combination of traps, insecticide treatments, and a brilliant engineering approach reduced mosquito populations in the area by 90%.
Dan also serves on the Board of Directors of the Mosquito BEACONS working group, which focuses on improving the capacity for invasive mosquito surveillance and control in the southern United States.
As a board member, Dan developed the TREAD (Tire Removal Education Alteration Disposal) Mosquito Management Program in partnership with GLOBE Observer. During a webinar, Dan showcased TREAD as a tool to inform students, stakeholders, and the general public about the importance of proper tire disposal to decrease mosquito breeding in discarded tires. Using the Global Mosquito Habitat Mapper app, citizen scientists can report improperly discarded tires to eliminate invasive mosquito breeding habitat. Through the TREAD Mosquito Management Program, Dan constructively applies his practical IPM experience to reduce public health risks.
In 2022, Dan founded EntoExchange, an online mosquito specimen database that provides researchers and pest control technicians with resources and encourages collaboration in mosquito surveillance. Through EntoExchange, users identify unknown mosquito specimens through vector surveillance to effectively combat pests. He has set up decorated booths for the last two years to promote mosquito specimen exchange through EntoExchange at the annual American Mosquito Control Association meeting.
Dan’s daily use of IPM practices in his pest control business and outreach program illustrates his exemplary implementation of IPM in the Southern region.
